Night Passage / Greece

$900.00

During a trip to Greece in the fall of 2018 I had a very long ferry ride from Pireaus to Samos. The group I was traveling with had been stranded in Athens for a few days because of a medicane—a hurricane in the Mediterranean Sea—which can cause very high waves and dangerous conditions for ferries. We left the port just as the sun was setting and expected to get to Samos sometime around 3 am. Normally a fun and easy passage. But on this trip because of the backlog of stranded tourists and locals the ferry was very full. Hardly an empty seat or bench to be found inside. It felt like we were never going to arrive. Just before the sun set completely I was looking out the window and saw in the distance islands poking their rocky bodies up out of the sea. I imagined how they were tied to the seafloor to maintain their positions. From that vision came this image. With all the images it is not meant to convey the actual scene but more what it felt like to experience the sea, the crowds, the movement of the ship all combined with a beautiful setting sun.
